<p>The woods are dark, night creeping up on you. The ride on the wagon is rough, the wagon's large wheels kicking up rocks and dirt. Slowly, it comes to a halt.
"This is the place," the driver says without looking back at you. You thank him and hop off. He cracks his whip, getting the oxen moving again. Before you know it, you're alone.

<p>You don't know how far the wizard's cabin is. Still, your gut urges you to continue. After all, he might select //you// as his first apprentice.
The wizard is a peculiar man. Not much of a wizard, really, with his tattered clothes and cane. He doesn't even have a beard. But you sense the magic in your village, catch glimpses of it everywhere you go. Yes, his magic is ripe in these lands.

<p>Finally, through the trees, you spot a structure. You pick up the pace, pushing the dense foliage out of your way, and find yourself at the cabin. It's hardly imposing, just a simple log cabin with a few windows and a small door.

You try the door again, then peer in through the windows.
"Hello?" you call. There's no response. Aggravation builds like a boiling kettle.

You walk for a long while, nighttime mere moments away. When you're done convincing yourself that you've wasted your time, finally cooling off, you realize that you're no longer on the path.

"Do you know how to get out of these woods?" you ask him.
The man huffs, plants his fists on his hips, and says, "It's too dark to find your way out of here now. Say, are you participating in the wizard's trial?"

The book snorts. "Hell if I know. I never see him perform any magic. Just peruses through we books all day."
You try to compose yourself, frustration building.
You replace the book on the shelf when...

<p>It's a chameleon. The lizard is no bigger than a banana and the color of fresh limes. It stands up on its hind legs and leans casually against the books.
"Have you been there this entire time?" you ask.
"I was just milling about," she says.
"What do you know about the wizard?" you ask.
The chameleon shrugs. "Just that he's always in a sour mood." She wanders off down the shelf until she's completely disappeared again.

As you're ruminating on this, a painting on the wall waves you over. The woman in the painting is holding a basket of bread and wearing a flowing, scarlet dress.

After some hiking, you expect to find yourself looped around back at the cabin.

"Crazy? How?" you ask.
The plant points one of her leaves to the mirror on the table. She says, "He'll stare into that thing for long hours without saying a word. And he's usually smiling when he does it. Curious, no?"

Such a destructive force it is, locked there in his cauldron.

You spin around, coming face-to-face with the wizard in the doorway. He's old and looks tired, with his cane and shaggy garb.
The wizard glances around briefly, pausing to regard the painting on the wall and the potted plant. Then he smiles to himself.

“I don’t understand,” you say, brow knitted in confusion.
The old man picks up the potted plant. She watches him strangely. He asks you, “Do you think she had any life before you entered this cabin? Or the painting? Or whatever else you saw in here?”

You blink at him.

"I...I don't believe you," you said.
"It's true," he says. “I’m sure you’ve witnessed it yourself. The impossible follows you wherever you go.” And you think to the magic in your village. The little man in the pinecones. The golden apple. And of course, all you’ve seen in the cabin.

<p>“Let me show you,” the old man says and walks over to his mirror. He picks it up and comes to stand beside you, raising the mirror so you can see your reflection.
“What do you see?” he asks.
“Myself,” you say.
“Funny,” he says with a smile, then angles the mirror towards himself. “So did I.”
In shock, you watch your reflection remain cast in the mirror, staring back at the old man. But the harder you look, the more you see your truth in glass.
Smiling...

So, you wander on, hoping to stumble upon the mysterious cabin. Gradually, daylight fades and you see less and less in front of you.
But before you have a chance to start panicking, by some streak of luck, you discover a path. It's narrow and overgrown, but it's most certainly a path and must lead somewhere...right?
